Election Day and Disinformation

Election day is Tuesday! There has been a lot of disinformation, misinformation, and fallacy surrounding elections. Bad actors use disinformation to delegitimize certain voting methods, sowing distrust in election officials and infrastructure and fan chaos and fear around voting. This not only confuses and dissuades voters but also degrades confidence that voters’ ballots will be counted and destroys trust in our democratic institutions. What is important is for voters to know that every vote counts.

Here are a few key points we MUST NOT forget:

  • In a democracy, voters choose their leaders and decide election outcomes. Every policy and practice in place – before and after ballots are cast – must pursue this basic democratic ideal.
  • Overwhelmingly, U.S. elections are run by principled Americans dedicated to ensuring that every vote is properly counted.
  • Following Election Day, election administrators use a variety of procedures for counting ballots and certifying the outcome of elections. These procedures are designed to ensure that election results are fair and accurate.
  • Voters, not partisan politicians, should decide elections.
  • Political candidates can challenge election results, but the system for challenging those results is bound by laws and requires proof.
  • Let’s keep improving our elections and make them more fair, equal and transparent.
