This fall, we will be offering as special topics course on the History of Piracy, HST 398.
This course will look at the history of piracy, primarily in the Early Modern Era. We will take a global comparative approach with a strong emphasis on the Atlantic and Caribbean dimensions of piracy. We will examine the relationship between pirates in all their forms and the state, questions of freedom and slavery, violence and fear, and the role of piracy in the building of empires and the development of international law. The course will also take different methodological lenses, reading social, intellectual, political, and legal approaches.
