The Buddha had an answer for that. To explore his solutions, sign up for PHL 244 Buddhist Thought for the Spring 2025 semester. We will be meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30-10:45 a.m.
According to the Buddha, many of our negative feelings arise because we have a false view of ourselves. He argues that if we can learn to see things (including ourselves) as they are, we can wake up and live without the stress, anxiety, worry and suffering we experience now. In this course, we will be examining those ideas as well as questions about the nature of reality, happiness, suffering, and human life in general. In order to better understand the ideas under examination, we will also experiment with some basic Buddhist practices – mindfulness, sitting meditation, walking meditation, metta practice, tonglen, and more.
This course counts for the Women and Gender Studies minor as well as the Philosophy minor and the Ethics minor.
