Discover <em>soup joumou<\/em>, Haiti\u2019s cherished pumpkin soup that embodies the spirit of liberation. Once forbidden to enslaved people, this rich, savory soup became the first meal Haitians shared as free people on January 1, 1804\u2014the day Haiti declared independence as the world&#8217;s first Black republic. Today, <em>soup joumou<\/em> remains a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and renewal. Every New Year&#8217;s Day, Haitian families gather to prepare and share this special dish, honoring their ancestors\u2019 triumph while welcoming prosperity for the year ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Come celebrate this meaningful tradition with the AFS community! We\u2019ll share stories, savor an abundance of authentic <em>soup joumou<\/em>, and celebrate new beginnings together. All are welcome to partake in this tradition of hope and remembrance. The soup is meatless with a beef option.
